Assistance, Assistants and Assistive Media. Barriers and Interfaces of Digital Cultures

The research project Media of Assistance, is organising its final conference in the coming summer term: "Assistance, Assistants and Assistive Media. Barriers and Interfaces of Digital Cultures" and would like to invite you to participate.

The conference will take place between 1 and 3 July, probably online. Submissions for papers should be sent to AssistiveMedia [at] leuphana.de by 18 April.

Die Universitäten in Deutschland streben danach, auf den unterschiedlichen Ebenen Chancengleichheit und Barrierefreiheit herzustellen sowie die diverse Zusammensetzung aller Statusgruppen zu fördern. Das Diskussionsforum befragt diesen inklusiven Anspruch der Hochschulen in Bezug auf assistive Medien und wird ihn mit den eingeladenen Gästen und interessierten Zuhörer*innen diskutieren.

Conversation starters for the Deaf and the Hearing

Deaf Culture and Hearing Culture, both have established ways of communicating among each other. When you want to mix and mingle, members of both groups need to find new shared channels. We present design considerations leading to our playful prototypes, serving as icebreakers and dialog starters. We rely on open source software to create open source hardware.

We have four exciting public talks by Myriam Winance, Michael Schillmeier, Beate Ochsner and Christian Meyer.

During the public talks, ASL interpretation will be provided.

2nd Network Meeting (17-19 March 2021)

Assistance - On the History of Assistive Ensembles

The category of assistive technologies is often discussed as a political category (Alper 2017), as they invoke connotations such as “in need of help” with respect to the respective users. At this meeting, the concept of assistance will be historically situated and questioned. The aim is to problematize the question of what meanings have been attributed to the concept of assistance in the context of dis/abilities in the history of digital media and what place the term takes in current debates about bodies with varying abilities.

Disability COVID Chronicles

Share Your Stories and Ephemera with the CDS-Tamiment Library

The NYU Center for Disability Studies is documenting the experiences of disabled and chronically ill people during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Disabled people, especially people of color and those living in nursing homes or other congregate housing, have been at greatest risk of infection and death from COVID-19. In building a publicly-accessible archive, we collaborate with community members to preserve memories, stories, artworks, and other materials in a range of accessible formats.
